34th Street Pedestrian Plaza Scrapped by DOT

_34th Street Pedestrian Plaza Scrapped by DOT

Last night NY Post columnist Steve Cuozzo triumphantly tweeted: "City has dropped insane plan for 34th St mall! Maybe they read my warning." Cuozzo, as you probably know, hates these pedestrian plazas, and the Post has waged a relentless editorial war to pressure the DOT to abandon a proposal that would radically transform 34th Street to prioritize buses and pedestrians over passenger cars. DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan (whom the Post calls "Sadist-Khan") says the reversal comes in response to community feedback, not tabloid demagoguery. But we all know what Steve Cuozzo's new pick-up line is. [MORE]

Stuyvesant Students Suspended for Racist Rap Video

Several of the Stuyvesant High School students who participated in an offensive rap video targeting a fellow classmate have been suspended, according to other students at the prestigious school. The Department of Education, which is investigating the video, would not confirm the suspensions, but several students tell the Daily News that the teens who made the video are being punished. In case you missed it yesterday, the video, which is no longer on YouTube, showed the boys rapping such lyrics as:... [ MORE ]

"Exclusive" Rich Kid Social Network Still Amusing

When we first heard about the Native Society, an online social club for douches "native New Yorkers and their friends," we were amused. And today while reading the NY Times' coverage of a recent Native Society event we were still amused! We aren't quite sold on the headline the paper of record went with, "Edith Wharton’s World, Recast for ‘Gossip Girl’". The characters in Wharton's books are so much more interesting than these self-satisfied kids (read a bit of The Custom of the Country and you will see what we mean), but headline nitpicking aside, author Alex Williams managed to get some lovely quotes from the Society members, including founder Oliver Estreich. So let's take a moment and enjoy them, shall we?... [ MORE ]

Park Slope's Anti-Rap Club Petition Prompts Priceless Comments

Prime 6, the new restaurant and bar coming to Flatbush and Sixth Avenue in Park Slope, may sometimes play hip-hop music. And as we noted yesterday, that fact has some Park Slope residents concerned that little Aidan may pick up some bad habits from the establishment's clientele and start asking mommy why pharaohs put the pussy in a sarcophagus. So one local, Jennifer McMillen, started a petition to pressure the club to book "indie artists" instead of hip-hop. This idea has generated some funny feedback on the petition website's comments. Here are the best ones:... [ MORE ]

TSA Agent Busted For Letting Drug Dealer Skip Security

The hits keep coming for the TSA. On Sunday box cutters were found aboard an international flight leaving JFK and then, on Tuesday, a 43-year-old TSA behavioral detection officer named Minnetta Walker was arrested and charged with helping a suspected drug dealer evade security. ... [ MORE ]

Times Square Sheep Decapitated Via Roundhouse Kick!

Yesterday a woman roundhouse kicked one of the 24 paper sheep currently set up in Times Square as part of a week-long installation. According to the NY Post, the woman—Taylor Galary—decapitated the sheep with her foot at around 7 a.m., then tried to flee in a cab. The 22-year-old was charged with criminal mischief. But to be fair, she was dared to do it. At press time it's unclear whether this was an escalated double-dog dare, or just a standard dare.... [ MORE ]

Video: Band Lures Lady Gaga To Union Square

We're having a rare moment where we're actually going to praise Lady Gaga for something. The Fame Monster caught wind of some Tweets a small New York band was directing at her, inviting her to see them perform her new single, "Born This Way," in Union Square on Sunday. According to the Washington Post, the band I Love Monsters doesn't personally know the performer, but that didn't stop them from relentlessly sending out notes "to Lady Gaga and her biggest fans to get her attention." That kind of social media assault may make them look like tools, but it works for Lady Gaga—who typically goes for more over-the-top publicity stunts. Check out the scene from Sunday in the video below:... [ MORE ]

Police Fatally Shoot Pit Bull During Domestic Dispute Call

Police mistakenly shot and killed a pit bull in the Bronx today while responding to a domestic dispute call. Lillian Martinez told the Post that she called police in the evening on Feb. 18 during a heated verbal argument with her husband, Anthony; cops had been called to the home for domestic violence at least once before. Cops were greeted at the door by their four-year-old red-nosed pit bull, Loc: “My husband heard the echo of the dog barking and clapped his hands twice. Before the dog could respond to him, there was one shot, then a second shot. My husband said he was shot in the head.”... [ MORE ]
