A Bronx woman who was standing in a parking space on East 14th Street in order to save the spot for her boyfriend is now in a coma after an argument over parking turned violent. Police tell the Post electrician Oscar Fuller became unhinged last Friday night around 11:40 p.m. when Lana Rosas, a petite 25-year-old, refused to let him park his white minivan in the space. The argument escalated, and Fuller punched Rosas "in the face with so much force that the woman flew off her feet," according to court papers. Now she's got permanent brain damage. [ MORE] | Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee is totally throwing himself into the national spotlight (and 2012 ring) with his remarks this week. After falsely claiming that President Obama grew up in Kenya, Huckabee, in a discussion about the Oscars, said on a radio program, "One of the things that's troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, 'Hey look, you know, we're having children, we're not married, but we're having these children, and they're doing just fine.' But there aren't really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie. And I think it gives a distorted image that yes, not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and nurses."... (Cyclists currently rank much higher on their to-do list than speeding motorists.) And though cyclists are beseeching officials for some kind of common sense compromise, the NYPD has said its committed to upholding the letter of the law, even when the crosswalk is empty. ... [ MORE ] | | From the POV of some tabloid columnists, the recent reworking of the city's streets is the DOT's Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark—an ill-conceived waste of time and money designed for the tourists—not the poor working man driving their SUVs. And DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan is their Julie Taymor: a myopic power-drunk "psycho" who is simply biking too close to the sun. The Post, in particular, has been withering in their assessment of the innovative commissioner (even calling her "Sadist-Khan), but the Times has also just published a fascinating, in-depth report on Sadik-Khan's polarizing tenure. It's chock full of money quotes, like this one from Councilmember Letitia James, a self-described friend of Sadik-Khan: "Other than Brownstone Brooklyn and parts of Manhattan, she is pretty much despised by my colleagues."... Sharon Springs resident John Hotaling was indicted in 2007 on one count of child pornography, and was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison. Hotaling argued that his "morphing" harmed no one and was meant solely to "record his mental fantasies." ... [ MORE ] | | That stupid petition urging a new restaurant/lounge in Park Slope to program "indie artists" instead of hip-hop acts was authored by one "Jennifer McMillen." But there is no record of this McMillen on the voter rolls, no one recalls her attending the heated Community Board meeting about the establishment, and there's no proof that a woman with that name resides in Park Slope. Some now wonder if McMillen even exists, and Brownstoner wonders if it's "a successful parody of the Slope or unnecessary race-baiting?" We wonder if it matters.... [ MORE ] | | |
